The NAACP Centennial Anniversary: A Red Carpet Event
Uncategorized Monday, October 26th, 2009On February 12, 2009, the NAACP marked it’s 100th anniversary. On October 15, the Washington, DC Branch celebrated its 100th anniversary of the NAACP with a premier Red Carpet event featuring Emmy Award winning actress Cicely Tysonand Grammy Award winning neo soul artist India Arie.
Hosted by WOL-AM Radio Talk Show Host James Madison (The Black Eagle), guests stood to their feet and sang the black national anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and enjoyed a musical tribute by the Duke Ellington School of the Performing Arts. Current President and CEO of the NAACP Ben Jealous and Ruby E. Lewis 1st Vice President presented Edna Hardmon, a long time supporter of NAACP with the distinguished Freedom Award.
Other highlights of the evening included a personal conversation with Cicely Tyson interviewed by the Rev. Marcia Dyson and a uplifting and soulful performance by India Arie. Both Tyson and Arie recieved Centennial Awards presented by Will Jawando 3rd Vice President of the NAACP Washington branch, and Washington D.C. NAACP Branch President Lorraine Miller who remarked “We proudly celebrate our past as we step into our future with a renewed sense of hope, duty, to our cause and enthusiasm.”
In the audience we found Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Congressman Al Green (D-TX), Congresswoman Diane Watson (D-CA), Lincoln Theatre Board Member Donna Limerick, and Washington Informer Denise Rolark Barnes.
The NAACP Headquarters, based in Baltimore, MD, along with its 1,700 units nationwide, will continue to host celebrations and observances throughout the year ending on February 12, 2010, highlighting the significant role the organization has played in leading social change in America.
