Maimah Karmo’s Tigerlily Foundation Benefit Gala

The  Tigerlily Foundation’s 1st Annual Breast Cancer Gala Honoring Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz took place October 22 at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, DC.  With more than 60 Congressional Members on the Congressional Honorary Committee this event was sure to be a great success. Founded by Maimah Karmoa breast cancer survivor, the  Tigerlily Foundation is a nationwide organization educating, advocating, empowering and providing hands on support and services to young women – before, during and after breast cancer.

Andrea Roane  of WUSA 9, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies while Chick Hernandez(Anchor, Comcast SportsNet), Sarah Frasier from Hot 99.5, Julie Parker (ABC 7) and Beverly Kirk(News Channel 8) presented awards to survivors.  Maimah was  diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer at 32 years old, since then she has dedicated her life to affecting change for young women. Her daughter Noelle stood by her side throughout the evening as shared intimate details about her journey to recovery.
 
She has been featured on Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Fox 5 and in Essence Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, Cure, Women and Cancer. In the audience we found Earl Stafford Jr.,  Carlos Allen of the Hush Society, David Burnett 80′s R&B Singer Al B. Sure,  Aidah Fontenot of the Aidah Collection, Dr. Sakiliba M. Mines, Angie Goff of WUSA9,  Jonathan Norris of Nore Photography, ABC-7 news reporter Julie Parker, Calvin Smith of the United Medical Center Foundation and many more.

Special recognition was given to the Honorable Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Transformational Award), Nikia Hammonds Blakely (Thrive Award), and Ray Bridgewater (Inspiration Award).  Special presentations were made by Marc Heyison , Marc Silver, Donna Guinn Kaufman, 8th Grader Chelsea Johnston, Jane Roser,  and the Rev. Kay F. Albury, all champions for the fight against breast cancer.
