Howard University School of Law Celebrates 140th Anniversary Gala
Washington, D.C. Friday, October 30th, 2009On October 24th the Howard University School of Law hosted its 140th Anniversary Gala at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Many alumni, supporters and members of the legal community from across the country arrived in support of educating the next generation of social engineers. The gala served as the culminating event of the School of Law’s year-long celebration of its illustrious history.
The award-winning actor, Laurence Fishburne served as the event’s honorary chairman along with Attorneys Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., The Honorable James W. Dyke Jr., Singleton McAllister-McHenry and Stacey J. Mobley as Gala Co-chairs. Guests enjoyed the sounds of the Howard University School of Law Gospel Choir and a special video presentation celebrating the law schools rich history.
“Celebrating the 140th anniversary of the Howard University School of Law provides an opportunity for us to reflect with pride on the past and to look with optimism to the future,” said Law School Dean Kurt Schmoke. “For many decades, graduates of Howard have been in the vanguard of leadership in Civil rights and Constitutional law. We are committed to building on that legacy by continuing to produce social engineers for America and the global community.”
The theme “Celebrating 140 years of Commitment to Justice, Leadership and Service” encompasses the school’s reputation for training excellent lawyers and leaders, who carry on the unfinished agenda of achieving civil, human and economic rights and justice for all. The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, (Dean’s Award for Distinguished Service), Sidley Austin LLP, (Distinguished Corporate Citizen Award), Sullivan & Cromwell LLP (Distinguished Corporate Citizen Award), and the 50th Reunion Class of 1959 (Alumni Legacy Award) were honored during the Gala. These honorees reflect Howard Law’s focus on its commitment to service and justice, fundraising, and recruitment.

The Phaze II Band played on following the gala, where guest danced the night night away. Funds raised from the gala help to support the school’s $10 million campaign to benefit the 140th Anniversary Fund’s three priority areas: revitalizing infrastructure, broadening access to need-based scholarships at the School of Law.

For 140 years, the Howard University School of Law has been a champion of civil rights and social justice. The School of Law has a proud tradition of producing leaders and social engineers. Through Howard’s doors have walked hundreds of the most prominent legal minds in history.
