Entertainment, Politics Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
On January 19, nearly 700 people from around the country joined in for a conference call surrounding Haiti relief efforts. Launched by the Hip Hop Caucus within 72 hours of the earthquake, HipHopHelpHaiti.org provides people with ways to stay informed, connected, and prepared to take action, large and small. Hosted by Rev Yearwood, President and CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus, speakers on the call included: Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Ron Daniels, President of Institute of the Black World 21st Century, Nicole Lee, Executive Director of TransAfrica Forum, David Banner, MC Lyte and Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth.

In August 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of the United States, the Hip Hop Caucus responded immediately with emergency conference calls daily with hundreds of people to organize relief efforts. After the continued failed government response to the needs and rights of Katrina survivors in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, the Hip Hop Caucus established the Gulf Coast Renewal Campaign, a coalition of national and grassroots organizations advocating for the right to return of Katrina Survivors. It was declared to be a “People’s Emergency Management Agency” (PEMA), in the face of a derelict Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
