Trust for the National Mall’s L’Enfant Society Holds Kick Off Event

On January 14, young D.C. professionals gathered for a cocktail benefit for the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service dedicated to restoring the Mall, which has become rundown due to lack of funding and 30 years of neglect. The National Mall, located at the heart of Washington, DC, is home to some of our nation’s most recognizable monuments, memorials and important events: presidential inaugurations, social and political demonstrations, and historical commemorations. It serves as a symbol of our democracy and provides every American and international visitor a chance to connect with our country’s history and heroes. Focusing on the National Mall footprint, The Trust is dedicated to restoring and improving this important space.

Although Ken Salazar delivered nearly $55 million for repairs to the Mall from President Obama’s economic stimulus package last year, the Trust estimates that another $150 million is needed for improvements to visitor facilities, for a total fundraising goal of $500 million. The L’Enfant Society was created last year to engage emerging philanthropists in the effort to return the National Mall to its former glory. Comprised of established professionals in the Washington area, the L’Enfant Society’s mission is to create awareness for the state of the National Mall, provide financial resources to meet annual fundraising goals, and generate a foundation of supporters who will guide the restoration effort in the future.
