Howard University Social Work Dean Leads Spring Break Mission to South Africa

A delegation of students and faculty from the Howard University School of Social Work led by Dean Cudore Snell are en route to Cape Town, South Africa as part of an international service-learning project during the spring recess. Twenty-one masters and doctoral students as well as eight faculty members will travel March 11-26. The overseas mission comes on the anniversary of the School’s 75th anniversary and also during National Social Work month.

The study abroad will offer academic credit and each student will be assigned a faculty mentor to assist them in completing a required assignment. The students will become familiar with social development and social work organizations through service projects in Cape Town.

Some students will accompany Dr. Sandra Edmonds Crewe, associate dean, to an all day consultation and planning meeting on program evaluation of home for senior citizens. All students will attend lectures by Social Work faculties from the University of the Western Cape and Huguenot College. Also, the eight Howard faculty members will engage in faculty exchanges with their South African counterparts surrounding contemporary issues in social work in the U.S. and South Africa. The Howard delegation will be in Cape Town on and will participate in events that underscore the social justice emphasis of their social work curriculum at Howard.
