en-US

Since 1988, the annual Leukemia Ball has raised millions of dollars for the fight against leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma. On Saturday March 27, they continued that trend hosting their 23rd Annual Leukemia ball, one of the largest charitable events in Washington. Gala Co-Chairs Ed Offterdinger  (Regional Managing Partner & Vice Chairman, Baker Tilly) and Steven L. Lilly (Senior Vice President & CFO, NRUCFC) helped to bring in more than 2,000 supporters who filled the halls of  The Washington Convention Center for a night of awareness and fun.

“We’ve been doing this for 23 years,” said Steven Lily.  “I served as the event co-chair in 2003 and 2004.  I’m very much comitted to finding a cure to the diseases we’re fighting.  In addition, I serve on the national board of directors to further my passion of finding a cure.”

The nights evening was made possible by  Baker Tilly Titan of Business and PhilanthropyLilly, USA - as well as 2010 Mission Sponsor  PhRMA.  The evening kicked off with  magnificant silent auction with the help of  Bidpal, an iPod Touch-like tool that allowed attendees to bid or donate from anywhere throughout the night, keep track of their bid, or enter a maximum bid and let the gadget keep bidding for them.  Not to be out done, two lucky winners walked away with Mercedes-Benz vehicles provided by Washington-area Mercedes-Benz dealers valued at about $90,000.

The festivities continued through out the night with entertainment by comedian John Pinette and Jackson Browne but took a more serious turn when the  Hodges family shared the story of their one-year-old daughter Sydney’s battle with leukemia. Leukemia effects a number of people across our country. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. With  68 chapters across the United States and Canada  the LLS help to fund over $71.4 million annually on research & patient services. LLS is committed to attracting and funding outstanding investigators and research centers. We support hundreds of researchers doing basic and translational research into cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. To learn more log on to www.leukemia.org.
